Iridessa Audition
Iridessa likes singing. Singing is what she’s best at. She even wrote her own music. She hoped one day she could meet a band and travel with them. But ever since the incident at the open mic last week, she can’t release a single note with the—sonic scream replacing her beautiful voice.
She was at the coffeehouse with some of the employees who could play instruments, they would assist with any singers who needed help. She asked them for background vocals and their instruments of course. She was just about to sing when suddenly, there was no note. There was just a screech. It sounded like a parakeet was screaming bloody murder. They threw her out, thinking it were some kind of prank.
Which it wasn’t.
And if it were, Iridessa didn’t find it to be very funny.
What was she going to do? Singing was all she was good at. She and her mother would sing together when she was younger. Growing up in Chicago, she exposed herself to so many amazing opportunities that she was finally ready to take. She tried again. Yesterday.
She was in her apartment. She had just exited the shower and as she thought, she considered it was a bad dream, or a fluke. So she tried singing a simple D note—the bloody murder C note erupted from her esophagus instead. Her mirror cracked and her landlord threatened to throw her out from the number of complaints her received. PETA was even sent to her apartment because the vegetarian on the floor below her claimed animal cruelty.
What was she to do with this ability, anyways? Assist construction workers with demolition by blowing all of the windows with a scream? She didn’t even want to raise her voice because it escaped her lips that way too. There had to be someone with the same problem, she thought.
She had to find somebody who could help her. She needed to be able to sing again. If she couldn’t, then she’d have to find a corporate job. One where she had to be quiet. If it came to that, she would back it one hundred percent. She would face the new situation with optimism and positivity. Being down about it wasn’t going to help her at all.
And besides;
She could still listen to other people sing too. Right?
